Midtown Detroit Techtown District Plan
Techtown District Plan
TechTown—an emerging knowledge district in Midtown Detroit—is currently characterized by surface parking, vacant properties, and inward-facing, siloed hubs of activity. The TechTown District Plan articulates an inspiring vision for the revitalization of the district. Developed by Sasaki Associates in collaboration with Midtown Detroit Inc. and U3 Ventures, the plan accelerates innovation, promotes entrepreneurship, and builds community around the generation of ideas in a vibrant, mixed-use setting. Leveraging the potential of key institutional anchors within the district (Wayne State University, College for Creative Studies, and Henry Ford Health System), the plan creates an environment that fosters knowledge generation and innovation. The plan repurposes the historic building stock with uses that support innovation and create vibrancy, and also strengthens connections within Midtown Detroit and to surrounding neighborhoods

Strategies Implemented
Design
  • To repurpose aged and vacant building stock into moveable and malleable work offices for a variety of user groups and needs
  • Open up street-level spaces for creative industries and allows the public to share space with common set of resources and supplies at an affordable hourly rate
  • Create and outfit an outdoor courtyard with amenities and programming to host a series of year-round events
  • Reactivate district corridors with moveable furniture, food trucks, and landscaping to transform parking lots and vacant sites into places for people to productively re-occupy the public realm
  • To create a walking-course in collaboration with local museum through the district to encourage not only active lifestyles but to also enlighten visitors to a digital history of the area
  • To mitigate storm water runoff through integrated landscape design features such as bioswales and pervious streets cape improvements
Process
  • Engaged experts to provide insights on the project's design by hosting a regular series of public forums that allowed professionals from urban design and planning design fields and individuals working with other innovative districts and research parks to present their thoughts and feedback
  • Facilitated several interactive events and online platforms to evaluate qualitative impressions of the project area, test program and design strategies, and to help prioritize cost investments
